00 I always need a good coffee in the morning and this morning is like any other. I arrive at the office with a large coffee in hand and some breakfast I picked up on the way to work. I have an hour in the office before I catch my flight to get to the clients site; a series of interviews have been booked and I need to finish off my preparation.
30 On my flight I go over the background research I prepared with one of the Analysts and an Engagement Manager. They did a great job and have unearthed some useful information about the changes the client's industry is currently undergoing. Currently I have two analysts on my project whom I mentor and coach.
30 I meet my Engagement Manager who has been at the client site since Monday and we go over the day's agenda. It is so important to establish an open and trusting professional relationship with everybody you interact with at work that I have put in a great deal of effort to develop this skill. My relationship skills have grown considerably since I have been with RPO and I feel better equipped to handle most professional relationships. Through my discussion with my Engagement Manager it seems that in order to meet with everybody that I planned to I will have to skip lunch, at least I had a good breakfast.
30 The interviews are going well. I get a chance to answer some emails and grab another muffin - apple and cinnamon this time
00 My interviews are coming to and end and my Engagement Manager has managed to schedule a meeting with the Director who is a key client contact. I'll need to reschedule my flight home. This will be a thought-provoking meeting as the project has taken a slight change in direction and we will need to layout a new plan for moving forward.
00 My Engagement Manager and I manage to get to the meeting room early and can get accustomed to the surroundings. The meeting room is hot and so I open the windows and get settled in. The Director is not far behind us and we immediately proceed with our discussion.
00 Two hours later we emerge with the first draft of the plan going forward. We will need to take this back to the office and spend a good few days on it with my team - ironing out the details.
00 On the flight home I discuss how the meeting went with my Engagement Manager on the phone. We were definitely productive. The day went well and I am excited about the future direction of this project.
30 I pop into the office on my way home to drop off my materials and pick up some reading for tonight. One of my analysts is in the office working on a presentation. I fill him in on the information I gained through the interviews and the new direction of the project. Our quick chat turns into a long discussion and I realize I better get home if I am going to get any reading done.
30 After checking the hockey scores and an hour of reading I am ready for bed.
Outside of work Earl enjoys playing golf, tennis, and card games. He frequently attends Vancouver Canucks games as well as local theatre and concerts.
